Conventions of your chosen genre( Thriller)

In a opening sequence of a thriller, there are many conventions that make an effective piece, in this blog im going to be writing examples of some conventions then giving some examples of why these conventions make an effective opening sequence for a thriller.

Low Key Lighting
In this clip we can see that there is low key lighting this is a convention of a opening sequence because it creates a more darker atmosphere which will leave the audience feeling tense because if you look at the connotations of the color black it's mostly negative.

In this clip low key lighting is used in a similar way to the sixth sense, this is because the low key lighting is foreshadowing whats going to happen this is because we can see the blood and the bullet and also it shows us the dead body and if we look at the connotations of the color black, we could use the example of death to link in with the low key lighting.

Close ups

In this video we can see four close ups, this is an effective convention of a thriller opening sequence this is because it's only giving hints of information to the audience this creates an effect on the audience making them feel tense and not normal.

This is another example of close ups used in the same clip of se7en, these close ups of the man cutting the skin of his fingers creates an effect on the audience because it's not showing the audience more information about this person it's only allowing the audience to see his hands, this leaves the audience asking questions, who is he? why is he doing that to his hands?

Dis-equilibrium

In this video dis-equilibrium is used in the opening sequence of brick, this is a convention of a thriller genre because it gives the audience a hint of that something bad has happened, this keeps the audience entertained because they want to know how the problem is resolved.

In the opening sequence of Memento, the convention of dis-equilibrium is used to make the audience understand that something bad has happened i this scene also it makes the audience ask questions for example, What has happened to this man? is this man key in the story?

Props

In this video we can see the props from the thriller memento, these props are a convention of a thriller because it makes the audience ask questions for example, who owns the glasses? was the bullet used?

In this video we can see some more props which are used in the thriller memento this shows that these props are conventional and not a one off this is because more than one set of props have been shown to create an effect.
