Titles

In a opening sequence of a film titles are shown to allow the audience to know the distribution company and the production company, the title of the film, the actors of the film, and the crew members of the film and below im going to give examples of titles which are used in films.

The sixth sense

In the sequence of the sixth sense it firstly shows the distribution company logo which is Hollywood pictures it then goes on to show the other distribution company which is Spyglass. Normally films only have one distribution company but for the sixth sense it has two.

This is a image of the production company for the film the sixth sense, normally it has no logo but for a exception of this film the sixth sense production company has no longer.
This is a screen capture of the main actor "Bruce Willis" films normally put the main actor first and then put the less important actors later on in the titles.
This is the screen shot it shows the title of the film which is "the sixth sense" this allows the audience to see the the title of the film.

This a video which shows titles which have two actors names on this shows that these actors aren't as important as the actors which were shown first.

This is the role of casting this is a crew role which means that this person finds the actors and actresses for the film, for the crew members the least important is shown first then it goes up and shows the more important crew members.
The role of the costume designer is to choose all the costumes for all of the actors and actresses before they start shooting the film.
This shot shows the name of the person that chooses and puts the music into the film, this is a important role because without the music the film wouldn't be as interesting as it would be with music.
The role of the editor is to link all of the shots together, to give the film meaning and to make it as interesting as possible.

This video shows the production designer who organizes getting all of the set for the film and it also shows the director of photography who chooses all of the shots for the film.

In this video it shows the executive producer who organizes getting the money for the film this is one of the most important roles because without the executive producer there would be no money to be put towards the film so the film wouldn't of been made, It then shows the producers of the film, for this film it has three producers but this normally isn't the case for some films. It finally shows the person who wrote the story from scratch and also directed it this is the most important role because the director chooses everything that he/she wants in the film.

Napoleon Dynamite

In the clip it shows the distribution company which is MTV films and then it shows the production company which is fox searchlight and paramount pictures, for this film it has two production companies but for other films it could only have one.

This is the title of the film
In this video it shows the director of the film, the producers of the film and the people that wrote the film, these titles are different to the sixth sense because in the sixth sense it showed these crew members last, but in this title sequence it shows them first.

In this video it shows all of the main actors in the film it goes from the most important actor to the less important, this is different to the sixth sense because in that it showed the actors first before the crew but for this film it shows the crew first and then the actors after.

This shot shows the person who was in charge of the music, this is different to the sixth sense because when the crew members were shown they were shown first but for this film there shown last.

This shows the person was in charge of choosing the shots for the film.

This shot shows the person who was in charge of the editing.

Conventions of a opening sequence

In this blog I'm going to be writing about the conventions of a opening sequence, I'm going to be giving examples of conventions then giving examples through images and videos.

Obscuring information

In this video we see the opening to brick in all the shots the convention of obscuring information is used, this is because we are shown very little information about this character, this has been chosen because it wants to make the audience ask questions, who is he? why he is the only character that we've been introduced to?

Another example of Obscuring information is shown through this opening sequence of memento, in this clip it does a similar thing to brick were it shows us bits of the character but doesn't show us him in full detail this also makes the audience ask question about, who is this character? and what is he doing?

Introducing a few characters

This is a extreme close up of the victim in the sequence of Wallander who got attacked this shot allows the audience to know that this is the victim of the attack.
This shot is a close up of one of the characters in Memento in this sequence we don't properly get introduced to this character but we know he's a main protagonist.
This is a low angle shot which is the first shot in the opening sequence of memento were we properly get introduced to this character this is a convention of a opening sequence because it has introduced us to the main character.
This shot is a two shot which allows the audience to finally see these two characters faces which allow us to see their emotions and feelings in the situation that their in.
This is a mid close up of one of the main protagonist from the opening sequence of the sixth sense, this shot allows the audience to ask questions about this character, who is he? what is his role in the film?

In this mid long shot we see a female protagonist who looks like she's in a seller, when we get introduced to this character it makes the audience ask questions in that, how is this character linked with the film? and who is this character?

Production and distribution company

In a opening sequence it has the distribution and production company logos before the titles come on, in this sequence of the sixth sense it shows the distribution company which Hollywood pictures and the production company which is Spyglass Entertainment.

In the opening sequence of the dark knight it shows us the distribution company which is Warner Bros. Pictures then the production company which is Legendary Pictures this is a convention of a opening sequence because it allows the audience to see the distribution company and the production company.

Brick Analysis (johnson,2005,US)

In the sequence of Brick the four elements are used to create meaning for the audience and below I'm going to be writing about all four of the elements and how they create meaning for the audience.

Sound:

In the sequence sound is used to create meaning for the audience, an example of this shown is the score which is played at the start of the sequence, this creates meaning because it brings tension to the audience we haven't been shown anything at this current time it also gives the sense that somethings not right and also could represent the protagonists emotions.
Another example of sound to be used

Another example of sound which is used to create an effect on the audience is the ambient sound of the bell in the school, this creates an eff ct on the audience because it shows the normality of the setting of the film also it shows that the characters in the film are quiet young their still in education.

Cinematography:

In the sequence cinematography is used to create meaning for the audience, an example of a shot that creates this effect is the focus pull, this creates meaning for the audience because the director isn't letting us see who this character is so it leaves the audience in suspense because we yet haven't been shown the character in clear detail.

Another shot that creates meaning is this establishing shot, this creates meaning for the audience because it shows us the location of were this character is and it also gives us more information because we see a new character which is a girl who is dead on the floor, this creates meaning for the audience because it makes the audience ask questions about who this girl? and did this man kill her?

Editing:
In the sequence, editing is used to create meaning for the audience, an example of this is the graphic match, this creates meaning for the audience because it gives us extra information in that the protagonist knows who this women is because we see her lying on the floor dead in the sewer then we see her putting a letter through the protagonists locker this means that these two characters are connected, this could make the audience feel confused and also excited because they want to know who this girl is and how did she die.

Another example of editing which creates an effect on the audience is the black screen which says the title of the film which is Brick, the black screen creates meaning for the audience because it gives a sense of danger and death and that these representations of the color black could be a main part of the film, this makes the audience feel threatened and worried because this is fore-shadowing what could potentially be a big part of the film.

Mise en scene:

In the sequence mise en scene is used to create meaning for the audience, an example of this is the close up of the note, this creates meaning for the audience because it shows the connection between the boy and the girl in the opening sequence, this creates meaning for the audience because it makes the audience ask questions about how these two characters are connected.

In this image we see the protagonist glasses, this creates meaning for the audience because this could symbolize this characters personality, this will create meaning for the audience because It shows us how this character could be treated in the sequence, this could make the audience fell threatened by this character because we don't what what he's like.
