Question 2
In our thriller opening sequence have many different characters which represent many different social classes
In the media people who have a mental disability are shown as paranoid, dangerous, alone and also bad. These examples below show these stereotypes through our mentally disabled character and also characters from other film titles.
![]() |
| This is our mentally disabled character in our opening sequence, he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. |
![]() |
| This character is from the film " A beautiful mind" and he suffers from schizophrenia |
Another stereotype of mentally disabled people which is in the media is that their; happy, harmless, caring and understanding. This is the character simple jack in the film tropic thunder, he is this typical stereotype.
We choose to make our main protagonist a mentally disabled male. In the sequence the character suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. In the media the mentally disabled are dangerous, alone and bad. In our opening sequence we've used some of these representations, for example our mentally disabled character is dangerous and also lives alone. As a group we decided to have these representations because we wanted to show to our audience how not all mentally disabled people are the same come can be safe to be around but some can be shown as a threat.
Middle class,business man-
As a group we decided to add the character who was in the social group of a middle class business man. In our opening sequence we've represented this character as smart and certificated. As a group we decided to gives this character this social class of a middle class business man because we wanted to show the audience how the main protagonist who is mentally disabled will react to someone who is of the social class. In the media Middle class business men are shown as people being; highly skilled, sophisticated and well dressed. In our opening sequence we used this representation for our middle class business man character.
Hoodies, teenagers, criminals-
In our opening sequence our final social class which we added was the social class of teenagers which are also hoodies and criminals. We choose to add these characters which had this social class because we wanted to show our audience how our mentally disabled character would react around these characters. In the media this social class is represented as; dangerous, intimidating and threatening so knowing these representations we thought as a group this would be the best social class which would test the mentally disabled character. The stereotype which is used in our opening sequence is the main stereotype for teenagers in general. For example they are represented as dangerous, social and intimidating. Below are some examples of teenagers which are typically stereotyped in the media.

Question 1
This blog is about media conventions of a opening sequence, for our opening sequence and for the opening sequences of other films.
Conventions of a opening sequence
Obscuring information
In this video we see the opening to brick in all the shots the convention of obscuring information is used, this is because we are shown very little information about this character, this has been chosen because it wants to make the audience ask questions, who is he? why he is the only character that we've been introduced to?
Another example of Obscuring information is shown through this opening sequence of memento, in this clip it does a similar thing to brick were it shows us bits of the character but doesn't show us him in full detail this also makes the audience ask question about, who is this character? and what is he doing?
Introducing a few characters
Production and distribution company
In a opening sequence it has the distribution and production company logos before the titles come on, in this sequence of the sixth sense it shows the distribution company which Hollywood pictures and the production company which is Spyglass Entertainment.
In the opening sequence of the dark knight it shows us the distribution company which is Warner Bros. Pictures then the production company which is Legendary Pictures this is a convention of a opening sequence because it allows the audience to see the distribution company and the production company.
In our opening sequence we used similar conventions to give it an extra effect and to give it more meaning.
Conventions of our thriller opening sequence
Slow paced editing
In this video all of the shots are slow paced this is a convention of a opening sequence because it allows the audience to see the location in more detail, also it gives them a more understanding of whats going on in the sequence.
Close ups and eerie music
In the video it has the close ups of the notes which the main protagonist has on his board whilst the closeups are on screen there is the eerie music which is being played, this is a convention of a opening sequence because its giving the audience a lack of information to work with and also the eerie music creates the effect on the audience in that it makes them feel that something isn't right and the music helps the audience to have these feelings.
Production and distribution company
In every film at the start there is the production company logo and the distribution company logo. For ours we had the same our production company is Psycho Productions and our distribution company is Vertigo films. This is a convention of a opening sequence because it allows the audience to see our distribution company and the production company.
Props
We used the conventions of props in our thriller opening sequence. We used this convention because it allows the audience to know more about the characters and settings just by the props which are chosen to be added in the thriller opening sequence.

These are more images of props which we included in our thriller opening sequence these props allow the audience to know a bit more information about these two characters.
Obscuring information

In these images it has the shots of the main Protagonist but we wanted to use the convention of obscuring information, so with all the shots which show the main protagonist we made sure
that the audience couldn't see his face, this convention is effective because it makes the audience want to watch it so they find out more about the character.
